Kane Brown has never shied away from talking about his struggles with depression, and he says one of the biggest reasons he’s been able to navigate those difficult moments is his friendship with Jelly Roll.

The two country stars teamed up for their powerful 2023 collaboration, “Haunted,” a song that tackles depression, addiction and suicidal thoughts. But according to Brown, their connection goes far beyond the recording studio.

During an interview with Men’s Health, Brown opened up about the impact Jelly Roll has had on his life, praising the singer for being unapologetically honest about his own past struggles. (Cue to 8:00 mark for this)

“I don’t know how I influence Jelly, but Jelly influences me just by being himself and speaking out,” Brown shared.

Brown even joked that Jelly Roll’s personality is impossible to ignore.

“He’s really just a preacher. I mean, he could sell you a car that he don’t have. He’s just that guy.”

That authenticity is exactly what made Brown want Jelly Roll on “Haunted.” Known for speaking candidly about addiction, mental health and redemption, Jelly Roll brought a level of honesty that perfectly matched the song’s message.

“Haunted” explores a painful reality that many people face but rarely talk about—the idea that someone can appear to have everything while quietly battling overwhelming mental health struggles.

Brown opens the song by describing a life filled with success, expensive cars, fame and luxury, only to reveal that none of it can fill the emptiness he’s feeling.

“I’m searchin’ for purpose / I feel wealthy but worthless,” Brown sings, capturing the disconnect between outward success and inner pain.

Jelly Roll adds another deeply personal perspective, reflecting on his own battles with addiction and the demons that have followed him throughout his life.

Brown has previously revealed that the idea for “Haunted” came while he was staying at the Stock Exchange Hotel in Manchester, England. Inspired by the building’s former bank vault, he imagined depression as something that haunts a person—an unseen presence that follows them wherever they go.

More than two years after its release, “Haunted” continues to connect with listeners because of its raw honesty and reminder that no one has to struggle alone. And for Brown, that message isn’t just found in the lyrics—it’s something he’s experienced firsthand through his friendship with Jelly Roll, whose willingness to speak openly about mental health has helped countless fans, and even fellow artists, feel less alone.
