Lady A is finding comfort in an unexpected place as the trio leans on a brand-new song recorded just days before Charles Kelley learned he has multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer.
The group recently shared an acoustic performance of the unreleased song, “Bigger Picture,” revealing the remarkable timing behind it. According to Lady A, the song was sent to Hillary Scott the day before the band headed into the studio to finish their upcoming album. They recorded it the very next day. Just one week later, Kelley received his cancer diagnosis.
“The day before we went into the studio to finish up our next record, this song was sent to Hillary,” the band wrote on social media. “We cut it the next day and then, a week later, we learned of Charles’ cancer diagnosis. God’s timing in allowing this song to find us and the message behind it is truly carrying us right now and we can’t help but think some of y’all might need to hear it too. We trust there’s a bigger picture.”
The emotional song touches on life’s toughest moments—from divorce and pregnancy loss to cancer—and encourages listeners to trust that God is still at work, even when life doesn’t make sense.
One verse hits especially hard in light of Kelley’s diagnosis:
“I’ve seen remission going on five years / When that hold-your-breath scan doesn’t come back clear… Sometimes I shout when I’m praying my prayers / Can you even hear me up there?”
The chorus offers a message of hope:
“It’s hard to believe it when all that we’re seeing is one little frame at a time… We all have our version of our picture perfect, but He has one better in mind… He’s painting a bigger picture for me.”
Kelley’s wife, Cassie, called the song’s timing nothing short of divine, writing on Instagram Stories, “There’s talking about divine timing and then there’s living it. This song is proof of the sweetest way we are all held.”
Kelley publicly revealed his diagnosis on Sept. 29, saying he’s feeling optimistic thanks to major advances in treatment for multiple myeloma. While there is currently no cure, newer therapies have dramatically improved survival rates and allowed many patients to achieve long-term remission.
“I feel really hopeful,” Kelley shared. “I’m young, I feel healthy, and the treatments have just come so far even in the past five years.”
The singer also said he plans to continue performing with Lady A whenever possible, explaining that staying on stage and spending time with his family are both important parts of his journey.
“Right now I feel great,” Kelley said. “I need to be happy and doing what I love to do and spending as much time with my family as I can.”
Lady A is still scheduled to perform during CMA’s Dolly Parton celebration concert later this month and plans to hit the road for its This Winter’s Night tour in December.
For now, the trio says the message of “Bigger Picture” is helping carry them through one of the most difficult seasons they’ve ever faced—and they hope it brings comfort to others facing hardships of their own.
