Matthew McConaughey showed off more than his acting skills during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Wednesday night, treating viewers to a bluegrass-inspired cover of Ella Langley’s smash hit, “Choosin’ Texas.”
Joined by Jimmy Fallon and indie folk band The Last Bison, the Texas native sang lead vocals while playing the mandolin—a skill he spent months learning for his new film, The Rivals of Amziah King, which hit theaters today. In the movie, McConaughey plays a bluegrass musician, making the late-night performance the perfect way to promote the project.
It didn’t take long for Langley to weigh in on the performance. After seeing the clip online, she reposted it to her social media and joked, “I may never recover from this.” She also commented simply, “Omg,” on Instagram, making it clear she was a fan of McConaughey’s take on her hit song.
“Choosin’ Texas,” from Langley’s Dandelion album, has become one of country music’s biggest hits, spending 17 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
McConaughey also addressed the long-running rumors that he could be joining Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe. While appearing on the show, he confirmed the two have discussed the possibility, saying, “Taylor Sheridan and I have spoken and have continued to have conversations about what it could be. But nothing’s real yet.”
