You’ll Never Guess the Vocal Group That Inspired Brett Young’s ‘You Didn’t’

Something interesting happened when Brett Young teamed up with Ashley Gorley, Jon Night, and Jimmy Robbins to write his song, “You Didn’t.”

The group realized they had something in common and it had nothing to do with country music…

Turns out, they were all huge fans of the 90s RnB group, Boyz II Men… Such huge fans, in fact, that they decided to lean into the influence of the group’s music and wouldn’t sleep until they created a song with, as Brett called it, a “Boyz II Men kinda throwback vibe”… and enter “You Didn’t.”

Look… I love nothing more than hearing artists give credence to their own idols. It reminds me that these stars are human, just like you and me. And, it’s really fun when you realize your favorite artist listens to the same music as you do!

So that’s all fine and well, however… I just don’t hear the influence! I’m no Boyz II Men savant, but as a 90s baby, I grew up listening to plenty of their records. And I can’t say “You Didn’t” ever made me even think of the genres Hip Hop or RnB…

But that’s just me! Either way, Brett was able to perform with his music idols on CMT Crossroads Christmas: Brett Young & Friends which aired on CMT on Dec. 8.

Check out their “This Christmas” collab performance below, and who knows, maybe you’ll pick up on the influence better than me!
