Kenny Chesney kicked off his 2026 Sphere residency in Las Vegas with a major surprise for fans on opening night, welcoming fellow country star Eric Church to the stage for a special three-song set that quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the show.

The June 19 concert marked the first of Chesney’s eight remaining performances at the state-of-the-art venue after he expanded his residency earlier this year. Fans were already in for a night packed with hits, but the excitement reached another level when Church appeared roughly 20 songs into the set.

The longtime friends began their collaboration with a performance of Chesney’s “When I See This Bar,” a song they frequently performed together when Church opened for Chesney during his Big Revival Tour. They then launched into two of Church’s biggest hits, “Drink in My Hand” and “Springsteen.”

It was during “Springsteen” that the evening took an unexpected and humorous turn.

According to fan-shot videos that quickly spread across social media, Church stumbled over the lyrics just moments into the song. Rather than trying to hide the mistake, he laughed and joked with the crowd, saying, “It’s always good to forget your biggest hit.”

Not taking any chances on the restart, Chesney borrowed a fan’s phone to help his friend get back on track, creating a lighthearted and relatable moment that fans embraced. Concertgoers and social media users praised Church for handling the slip-up with humor and authenticity, noting that even music stars occasionally experience brain fog.

Ironically, Church isn’t the first artist to be thrown off by the overwhelming visuals inside the $2.3 billion Sphere. Chesney himself admitted earlier this year that he forgot lyrics during his own debut performances at the venue in 2025.

Speaking on Literally! with Rob Lowe, Chesney explained that the immersive visual experience can be distracting, saying he became so captivated by the massive displays surrounding him that he completely lost his place in songs he had written himself. He recalled asking the audience for help, turning the mistake into what he described as a bonding moment with fans.

The opening-night show featured a career-spanning setlist that included favorites such as “Here and Now,” “Beer in Mexico,” “Summertime,” “I Go Back,” “American Kids,” “Anything but Mine,” and “Don’t Happen Twice.”

Chesney’s 2026 Sphere residency continues with performances on June 20, 24, 26 and 27, followed by July 1, 8, 10 and 11. While the surprise appearance from Church was a highlight, it was the unscripted and genuine moment between two country music superstars that left fans talking long after the show ended.

@countryminute Eric Church surprised No Shoes Nation with an appearance at the opening night of Kenny Chesney at The Sphere. During the three song appearance, Church forgot the lyrics to “Springsteen,” which lead the crowd to burst out laughing. He pulled it together, but it made for a big moment at the show.
