Megan Moroney/Kenny Chesney Collab Is On The Way

By Joe Malone May 1, 2025 | 11:09 AM

Country artists Megan Moroney and Kenny Chesney are joining forces for a heartfelt new duet, “You Had to Be There,” set for release on May 9. The collaboration comes on the heels of the two spending time together promoting Chesney’s new TikTok account—but their time together was more than just social media content.

Moroney and Chesney hit the road last year for Kenny’s “Sun Goes Down” Tour last summer and it’s pretty clear that the two of them forged a very good friendship on tour together. Megan wrote the song as a thank-you to the country legend.  Opening up about the experience, she admitted she was nervous to ask him to collaborate and needed “a few drinks” to work up the courage. Fortunately, her bravery paid off.

“‘7 years later got a different point of view…’ YOU HAD TO BE THERE FT. KENNY CHESNEY OUT MAY 9TH,” Moroney captioned an Instagram post, which included a carousel of behind-the-scenes photos and a teaser of the track.

Chesney responded with gratitude and admiration. “As far as I know, this is the first song anyone has written for me,” he shared. “Thank you, Megan. I love ya.”

With its personal backstory and the emotional depth suggested in the lyrics, “You Had to Be There” is shaping up to be a standout moment for both artists.
