Cody Johnson is keeping fans on their toes…
Earlier this week, the Texas native surprised us all by dropping a brand-new song, Blame Texas, with absolutely no warning. No teaser posts. No countdown. No hype campaign. The track simply appeared on streaming platforms overnight, catching fans completely off guard.
“We had so much fun cuttin’ this one in the studio, I couldn’t keep it to myself. Had to let y’all have it,” Johnson shared about the unexpected release.
“Blame Texas” marks Johnson’s first brand-new solo release since the deluxe edition of Leather arrived in late 2024. That alone made the surprise even sweeter for fans who have been eagerly waiting for new original music.
While CoJo has stayed busy over the past year with collaborations and special projects, this is his first true solo offering in quite some time—and it feels like a return to his roots.
“Blame Texas” comes out swinging with twangy electric guitar, driving fiddle, and plenty of steel guitar. It’s the kind of sound fans have come to expect from Johnson—traditional, heartfelt, and unmistakably country.
Lyrically, the song leans into Texas pride and playful stereotypes, from chasing tequila with beer to finding a way to put fiddle in every song. One standout moment comes when Johnson proudly chooses George Strait over Elvis Presley, earning instant approval from traditional country fans.
But beneath the humor, there’s real emotion. By the final chorus, Johnson flips the script, admitting he can’t blame Texas for a broken relationship—taking full responsibility for the heartbreak.
Although “Blame Texas” is his first major solo release in over a year, Johnson hasn’t been slowing down. In 2025, he released a popular cover of “Travelin’ Soldier” and collaborated with artists like Brandon Lake, CeCe Winans, and Michael Martin Murphey.
Now, he’s gearing up for even more.
Johnson has confirmed that a new album is on the way, featuring collaborations with Luke Combs and Brothers Osborne. He’s also teased a special rock project with one of his longtime idols—adding even more excitement to what’s ahead.
If this song is any indication of what’s coming next, 2026 is shaping up to be a huge year for CoJo—filled with new music, exciting collaborations and a big tour! Fans will also have a chance to hear CoJo live when he takes the stage at Summerfest in Milwaukee on June 26th. Tickets are available now at y1065.com in the concerts tab.
