Country music superstar Luke Combs is reflecting on how far he’s come—while dreaming about going back to where it all began.

Recently, Combs shared a throwback photo from his very first live performance at the Parthenon Cafe in Boone, North Carolina. The image shows a college-aged Combs, guitar in hand, during his early days while attending Appalachian State University around 2011. That modest performance marked the beginning of a journey that would eventually make him one of the most successful artists in modern country music.

Now celebrating 14 years in the music industry, Combs has risen from playing small-town bars to becoming a global sensation. He has earned numerous No. 1 singles, sold out arenas worldwide, and amassed an impressive list of accolades. Among them are his induction into the Music City Walk of Fame and the distinction of becoming the highest-certified country artist in RIAA history.

Despite his massive success, Combs hasn’t forgotten his roots. During a recent interview with Willie Geist on the Sunday Sitdown podcast, he teased fans with what he described as a dream project: a full SEC college bar tour. The idea would see Combs returning to the intimate venues he once played—this time with a twist.

“I dream of doing like an entire tour of just venues I used to play,” Combs said, envisioning 20 or more shows across SEC towns. His dream lineup includes stops at Brick Street in Oxford, Ohio; Tin Roof Columbia in South Carolina; and iconic Athens, Georgia venues like the Georgia Theatre or the 40 Watt Club.

The most surprising part? Free admission.

“No pricing. No presales. Just show up and hope you get in,” Combs explained, noting that some of the venues, like Tin Roof Columbia, hold only about 300 people. For fans lucky enough to make it inside, it would feel like winning the lottery—though it could be a logistical nightmare for everyone else.

Still, the idea perfectly captures what has defined Luke Combs’ career: humility, gratitude, and a deep appreciation for the small stages that launched him to the top of the country music world.
