Another day, another AI story that gives us pause…

Currently, at least six companies in China have found a disturbing way to make money through artificial intelligence… By offering deepfake AI avatars of dead loved ones for customers.

As you would imagine, this is so that after someone loses a loved one, they can continue to Facetime or video chat them.

Of course, the tech companies are still working out some kinks… as the avatars can still come off as “stiff” and “robotic.” Hmmm, I wonder why.

You might be thinking something like this costs a pretty penny. And it did last year. The average cost for one of these avatars was around $3,000. Now, customers can find them for as low as a few hundred.

There’s some serious ethical and moral questions that come along with these postmortem avatars. Is it healthy? Who is responsible for what the avatar says? What if family members disagree?

What do you think of this new technology?
