I think it is safe to say that Winter has finally shown up in Wisconsin. Looks like this weekend and into next week the temps will be dipping down into the single even below zero temps. Now is the perfect time to make sure that not only you are prepared for the cold but also your pets as well. Here are some simple tips to remember to help keep your pets safe and warm this winter.

  • If it’s too cold for you, chances are it’s too cold for them When the temps start going below 32, they should not be outside for long periods. Bring them in.
  • Dress them for the weather – Much like us, we make sure that we are bundled up with a coat, hat, boots, and gloves. Yes, their fur keeps them warm mostly and protected from the elements. It’s still a good idea to put a jacket or sweater on them if they don’t have a winter coat. Also, the paws of dogs are very much exposed to the elements. Try using booties when they are going out for walks. That will help protect their paws from getting frostbit. If they don’t like the booties, make sure that you clean their paws thoroughly to remove any salt, snow, and ice.
  • Pay Attention To Them – Frostbite and hypothermia can happen a lot with pets. It’s important to know what to look for. If you see any discoloration, blisters, or discoloration they could have frostbite. Also, these are a few things to watch for if they have hypothermia: difficulty breathing, pale gums, and shivering.

When in doubt call your vet.
